The cows in the field were dull and slow and not nearly as interesting to watch as they'd been in the cowboy movies he'd seen as a child. Jesse supposed he ought to have been more patient and understand that America wasn't quaint like he'd seen in films as England was no more quaint than Yanks thought it was from what they saw in films. Maybe if he lived here long enough he'd understand what it meant to be American, even if he never really became one.

I like how he is trying to separate what he has seen from what he has experienced. What he thought to be and what really is. It really shows the difference in perspectives. I like how he is trying to identify with what is than what be believed to be.
